'Jeopardy!' host injured chasing burglar (omg!)

SAN FRANCISCO - The woman accused of stealing cash, a bracelet and other items from Alex Trebek's hotel room is being ordered to stay at least 150 yards from the "Jeopardy!" host and his wife.

A judge Thursday also set Lucinda Moyers' bail at $625,000, noting that the two-time convicted burglar could face an extended sentence under California's three-strikes law if she's found guilty again.

San Francisco Superior Court Judge Jeff Ross said a public defender would be assigned to the 56-year-old woman. She appeared in court in an orange jumpsuit but won't enter a plea until her arraignment set for Monday morning.

Trebek says he ruptured his right Achilles heel after he awoke early Tuesday to someone in his hotel room and chased Moyers down the hall. He's scheduled to have surgery Friday.

No one needed to buzz in with a response when "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek appeared at Google headquarters to host the National Geographic World Championship. The question, clearly, was why he was hobbling on crutches.

"The answer is, at 2:30 yesterday morning, chasing a burglar down the hall at my San Francisco hotel until my Achilles tendon ruptured and I fell in an ignominious heap to the carpeting," he jokingly explained Wednesday in the show's signature answer-before-question format.

Lucinda Moyers ? the woman accused of stealing cash, a bracelet and other items from Trebek's San Francisco hotel room ? was expected to answer some questions from a judge Thursday afternoon.

The 56-year-old San Francisco woman was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and receiving stolen property, police Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.

Trebek, 71, said he snapped the Achilles tendon while running after the woman around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. He is scheduled to have surgery Friday and is expected to be in a cast for six weeks.

Trebek, who has hosted the syndicated quiz show "Jeopardy!" since 1984, was sleeping at the Marriott Marquis Hotel when he realized someone was inside his room looking through his belongings, he told KNTV.

"I woke up and saw a figure in our hotel bedroom and I thought I was dreaming," he said. "A moment later, I got up and saw that the door was being held open by a wad of tissue. I opened the door and saw a woman walking away, and I realized immediately that someone had been in the room."

Trebek said he ran down the hall and confronted her.

"She came out of the little room where the ice machine is and I said, 'What were you doing in our room?'" Trebek said. "She said, 'I wasn't in your room!' I said, 'What are you doing up here?' She said, 'I was visiting friends.' I said, 'No, you weren't. Let's see what security has to say about that."

"As I reached for the phone to call security, she bolted. She ran down the hall. I chased her. And I didn't get more than 25 feet before my right Achilles tendon ruptured and I crashed to the ground."

He limped back to his phone and called security. The suspect was apprehended inside the hotel and most of the stolen items were recovered near the ice machine, but no cash was found, Dangerfield said.

"We got most of our stuff back, except the one piece of jewelry that I ever wear. It's a bracelet that my mother gave me many years ago, so that's gone. And cash," Trebek told KGO-TV. "I figured she stashed it somewhere in the hotel, and we'll come back to retrieve it someday."

The district attorney's office said Moyers has two prior burglary convictions from the early 1990s.

Sprint results disappoint, shares fall 20 percent (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Sprint Nextel Corp's shares plunged nearly 20 percent on Thursday as heavy subscriber losses in the second quarter called into question the strategy and outlook of the No. 3 U.S. wireless company.

Sprint had spent heavily to promote its service and better compete against larger rivals Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. But that strategy backfired as profit margins eroded and customer losses persisted.

The weak results overshadowed Sprint's announcement of a $9 billion network contract with start-up LightSquared, and sent the stock tumbling to its lowest point since February before recovering a little to close down 16 percent.

Investors questioned whether Sprint would be able to meet its 2011 targets after such a disappointing performance.

"Their cost of doing business went up dramatically," said Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Larsen. "People have less confidence they can meet expectations."

Sprint's operating profit margin of 16.3 percent was well below the average Wall Street estimate of around 19 percent as the company had changed its product rebate terms in an effort to combat Verizon Wireless' sale of the Apple Inc iPhone, and an iPhone discount at AT&T.

But the bet did not pay off as Sprint still saw defections of 101,000 net subscribers -- also known as post-paid customers -- compared with analysts' expectation for losses of 15,000.

Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless added 1.3 million subscribers in the quarter and AT&T added 331,000 subscribers.

Chief Financial Officer Joe Euteneuer said Sprint made a "conscious decision" to spend more in the second quarter in the hope of avoiding getting "killed with market share."

"This was a unique quarter because of intense competition," he told analysts on a conference call.

Sprint warned the rate of customer defections would worsen this quarter, in line with typical third-quarter trends, but repeated a promise for subscriber growth in full-year 2011.

GUIDANCE DOUBTS

Chief Executive Dan Hesse said improvements in subscriber numbers in June gave him confidence the company could meet its targets for the rest of the year.

"If we continue at the current pace of improvement we will get there. The only way we won't is if performance deteriorates," Hesse told Reuters.

But analysts doubted if Sprint could meet its target for a 2011 operating profit that is roughly the same as in 2010.

"People are right to be skeptical," Pacific Crest analyst Steve Clement said. "They didn't point to any silver bullet."

Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett was also skeptical.

"Without post-paid subscriber growth, Sprint has little prospect of generating sustainable revenue growth, nor of generating sustainably rising margins," he said. "On those critical dimensions, Sprint's results were a clear disappointment."

Adding to the uncertainty, Sprint did not outline its plans to develop fourth-generation (4G) high-speed wireless services, and instead postponed that announcement to October.

Even news of the LightSquared deal failed to comfort investors, who questioned if they would ever see the fruits of that partnership because it is dependent on LightSquared solving difficult technology problems and raising money.

Under the agreement, LightSquared -- backed by hedge-fund manager Philip Falcone's Harbinger Capital -- will pay Sprint $9 billion in cash over 11 years. Sprint also has the option to rent space on the LightSquared network through credits estimated to be worth $4.5 billion.

The news pushed Clearwire shares down 22 percent as Sprint is its majority owner and biggest customer. Sprint declined to comment when asked if it would continue to use Clearwire beyond its current agreement which expires in 2012.

"It's less clear that Sprint and Clearwire will have a long-term fruitful relationship," Larsen said.

Hesse said he would be in a position to give a clearer picture of Sprint's strategy on October 7.

"There are some new pieces to the puzzle that were unanticipated that will add strength and color to the story if we wait a little longer," Hesse said without giving details.

Sprint's loss widened to $847 million, or 28 cents per share, from $760 million, or 25 cents a share, a year earlier.

Excluding items such as losses from its Clearwire investment, Sprint's loss per share of 6 cents was better than Wall Street expectations for 12 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Net operating revenue rose to $8.31 billion from $8.03 billion.

Sprint shares closed down 15.9 percent at $4.34 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Special Needs Kids Bullied More, Fare Poorly at School (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Many 'special needs' kids who struggle with medical, emotional or behavioral issues often face tough social and academic troubles in school, a new study suggests.

Tracking the progress of more than 1,450 students in fourth through sixth grades from 34 rural schools, U.S. researchers found that one-third coped with special health care needs such as asthma, chronic pain, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, or emotional or behavioral problems.

These children, from three large school districts in Maryland and West Virginia, were also more likely to be bullied or feel socially isolated in their school, and to be more disruptive in class, according to the cross-sectional study, published in the July 25 issue of Pediatrics.

"Health affects school performance," noted study co-author Dr. Christopher B. Forrest, a professor of pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "Special health care needs have manifold effects on school outcomes that increase the likelihood that these kids are not going to successfully transition to adulthood."

For the study, Forrest and his colleagues obtained survey data from students and their parents, who completed a screening questionnaire measuring long-term health problems that require health services or cause functional problems. Children were classified as having a special health care need if they had a condition lasting at least 12 months and needed interventions such as prescription medication, therapy, counseling or other medical, mental health or educational services.

Additionally, school records were measured for attendance, grades and standardized achievement test scores.

Forrest said the finding that one of every three students had a special need was high -- greater than a 2003 national survey indicating 20 percent of children aged 6 to 17 had such conditions. But he added that some of the problems stemming from chronic conditions do tend to peak in the ages he and his team studied. Boys were twice as likely to have a special health care need as girls, the study found.

But the overall findings from the study were disheartening, Forrest said. Kids with special health care needs "have significant differences in their engagement in school and their school relationships, as well as academic achievement," he said. "It sets up a trajectory for these kids that's highly distressing."

The high proportion of low-income families living in the three districts studied could have contributed to the study results, Forrest noted, because higher-income schools may have more programs in place to help kids adjust to special needs before fourth grade.

"It's not a national study," he said. "Some communities may have better resources than others."

James Wendorf, executive director of the National Center for Learning Disabilities in New York City, praised the study, saying it "looked at the whole child."

"It certainly clarifies that learning disabilities, once again, are shown to have a demonstrable effect on children's achievement in school," Wendorf said. "We know that students with learning disabilities . . . have very distinct social and emotional challenges that can lead them into difficult situations. We also know many of these things intensify as children grow older."

And because the study used a cross-sectional design, Forrest said he was unable to rule out reverse causation -- that children with poor school outcomes may also be more likely to be labeled as having a special health care need.

Because the problems linked to these special needs can't be qualified as only health- or education-related, Forrest also questioned how communities can bring both systems together when each is funded by a separate stream of finances.

"I also believe it's the kind of challenge we're starting to understand in the 21st century," he said. "We have to look at the child as a whole person . . . and recognize that individuals need health systems and education systems to work together."

Visa 3rd-qtr profit leaps 40 with greater card use (AP)

NEW YORK ? Visa Inc. will offer a new menu of incentives to retailers and their banks as part of its effort to offset the impact of new regulations on debit card use.

The San Francisco-based payments processor said Wednesday that it will use a series of strategies like reducing certain fees charged to handle debit purchases, and fixing other fees that are now variable, to make its network more appealing to merchants.

Under the new regulations, stores will have the option of choosing which network handles transactions, whereas in the past that was mainly determined by contracts. Giving retailers a choice in routing could mean a big hit to Visa's revenue. The strategies are designed to encourage merchants to choose Visa to process their sales.

"We expect this will help us win routing decisions and maintain debit in the new environment," said CEO Joseph Saunders during a conference call to discuss the company's fiscal third-quarter results. "With these actions, we are resetting our baseline economics for debit in the United States and positioning Visa to grow from here."

Visa, which holds a significant lead in debit card market share over rival MasterCard Inc., has said the new rules will hurt a stream that currently accounts for about 20 percent of the company's revenue. The regulations also include a cap on so-called interchange fees that is expected to average about 24 cents per transaction, down from an average of 44 cents now, starting Oct. 1.

The company accordingly forecasts slower growth in revenue and earnings per share for its next fiscal year, which starts the same day.

For 2012, Visa projects high single- to low double-digit percentage growth in revenue and mid-to high-teens percentage growth in earnings per share.

"That's pretty attractive, given that 20 percent of their revenues were cut in half," said Edward Jones analyst Shannon Stemm.

Analysts, on average, were expecting 11 percent revenue growth and 16 percent earnings growth for 2012, according to FactSet.

Stemm said consumers are likely to see banks emphasize debit cards less because they stand to lose revenue under the new regulations. But that will probably come in reduced marketing efforts and cuts in debit rewards ? not the derailment of growth in the debit business.

"We expect debit growth to continue to outpace credit," she said.

During Visa's third quarter, U.S. debit card use rose 11 percent and remained well ahead of credit card use as consumers continue to watch their spending and be cautious about running up debt. Yet credit use also rose 10 percent, the sixth straight quarter of gains after a big drop during the recession.

The company said its fiscal third-quarter net income shot up more than 40 percent, to $1 billion, or $1.43 per share. Adjusted for accounting related to its European business, Visa's net income for the quarter was $883 million, or $1.26 per share.

That topped the $1.23 per share expected, on average, by Wall Street analysts, according to FactSet.

Revenue rose 14 percent to $2.32 billion, from $2.03 billion a year earlier, also topping analysts' average forecast, which was for $2.3 billion.

Visa said its strong results reflected growth in how often people used their cards and how much they spent, and in the number of cross-border transactions.

International growth was key to the results, with total volume leaping nearly 25 percent for credit purchases outside the U.S. and 27 percent for debit purchases. Visa has said it aims to boost revenue overseas, in part to offset profit lost to increasing regulation in the U.S.

During the conference call, Saunders detailed its growth in markets from Brazil to Russia and Japan to sub-Saharan Africa where the company expects revenue to substantially increase in the next five years. In India, for instance, over 1 million Visa debit cards have been issued in the last few months under a deal with the State Bank of India. And in Japan, a major bank recently launched Visa's first traditional debit program in that market.

During the quarter, the company repurchased about 13.7 million class A common shares, at an average price of $77.36 per share, for a total cost of $1.1 billion. Visa said its board has approved a new $1 billion buyback program through July 20, 2012.

Visa also reiterated its forecast for its full fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. It continues to expect revenue to rise between 11 and 15 percent, or between $8.95 billion and $9.11 billion. It expects earnings-per-share growth of at least 20 percent, or least $4.84 per share.

Wall Street expects revenue of $9.15 billion on average and earnings of $4.92 per share.

In afterhours trading, Visa stock added 18 cents, to $87.93, from its close in Wednesday's regular session at $87.75.

Turkey mulls harder line if Israel refuses to apologise (AFP)

ANKARA (AFP) ? Turkey is preparing to harden its attitude towards Israel for its refusal to apologise over last year's deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, official sources said on Tuesday.

The Israeli government has to date failed to either say sorry or compensate families of the nine activists who were killed in May last year in a commando raid on the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish-owned ferry which was leading the convoy.

Speaking after it emerged a UN report into the incident had been delayed yet again, a senior source in Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government said that Turkey was ready to toughen its line towards its former ally.

"The ball is in the Israeli court. If it decides to apologise, then everything's fine. If not, then we will have to resort to Plan B," the Turkish diplomat told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Among the measures under consideration are moves to bring legal action against the Israeli commandos who took part in the raid or further chill already frosty diplomatic ties.

Turkey, which recalled its ambassador to Tel Aviv after the raid and still only has a charge d'affaires in place, could further downgrade its diplomatic representation and withhold agreement when Israel wants to name a new envoy to Ankara, the source added.

Turkey would strive to have "the Palestinian voice" heard more in international organisations, particularly at the United Nations where Palestinians are pushing for full membership.

The Turkish government would also try to take a more active role in efforts to reconcile the two main Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah. Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, has been behind dozens of anti-Israeli attacks and refuses to recognise the Jewish state's right to exist.

Erdogan has also recently raised the idea of paying a visit to Gaza -- in a move press reports suggested would take place if Israel continues to refuse to apologise.

Visiting the Hamas-run Gaza Strip would most likely further exacerbate tensions with the Jewish state.

Israel's cabinet is understood to be split over the issue of an apology with Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman dead set against, while Defence Minister Ehud Barak and Intelligence Minister Dan Meridor are in favour.

SYDNEY (AFP) ? New Zealand will be favourites to win the World Cup whatever happens beforehand as injury-hit South Africa put their Tri-Nations title on the line next weekend, Springboks skipper John Smit said.

World and Tri-Nations champions South Africa take on the All Blacks in Wellington next Saturday, coming off a convincing 39-20 loss to the Wallabies in Sydney on Saturday.

South Africa left 21 injured front-line players at home for their Australasian leg of the Tri-Nations, and paid the price as the rampant Wallabies posted a five tries to two victory.

It was the Springboks' biggest loss in Australia since a similarly weakened team was crushed 49-0 in Brisbane five years ago.

But hooker Smit, South Africa's most-capped Test captain and playing in his 103rd international, saw positives for the Springboks going forward to September's World Cup in New Zealand.

He said Saturday's match had not been a blow to their confidence.

"It's more of an experience for those guys who haven't been out on this arena and just to feel the difference in speed and physicality," he said.

"Every game you lose is a confidence blow, I suppose, but a lot of these guys wouldn't have experienced Test rugby yet, some of them haven't got more than 10 Test caps -- if anything it will be invaluable to those guys who haven't been around."

The All Blacks, who swamped Fiji 60-14 in Dunedin on Friday, will be strongly fancied to win their fourth straight Test against the Springboks next Saturday, but that doesn't diminish South Africa's chances of defending their World Cup crown, Smit said.

"I don't think anyone is going to be able to take the favourites' tag from New Zealand, no matter what happens in the Tri-Nations," he said.

"So we have the pressure of arriving there as defending Tri-Nations champions and we have to make sure we are the best prepared as possible.

"We have three more games to go in the Tri-Nations and lots to do and lots to prepare for."

Smit said South Africa paid for lapses in concentration and turning over the ball to the Wallabies, but will learn from the experience allied to the return of their injured big names for their home Tri-Nations Tests next month.

"What I enjoyed about our younger side was that they chased to the death," he said.

"There were tries going begging out there for the Wallabies and there was a lot of guts chasing to make sure it didn't happen, and they are the things we can draw upon. ...

"We'll have to learn from this, let those guys take the experience in and then be pretty harsh on Monday in terms of what we trained for three weeks but didn't quite execute well enough today."

Coach Peter De Villiers expects to have Paris-based lock Gerhard Mostert available for selection for the All Blacks Test as a replacement for Johann Muller, ruled out of the tour with a hamstring strain, while lock Flip van der Merwe has injured ribs.

Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment today according to numerous reports. The UK singer was 27 years old.

A press release from Metropolitan Police does not specify Winehouse by name, but reads: "Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05 hours today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased. On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Inquiries continue into the circumstances of death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained."

Winehouse canceled her European tour last month, and has long struggled with substance abuse.

On June 18, Winehouse performed the first show of that European tour at Forest Fest in Belgrade, Serbia, but things went terribly wrong. The Brit songstress reportedly showed up more than an hour late and then once there, she repeatedly left the stage mid-performance. Winehouse forgot lyrics to her songs and even dropped the mic as a disgruntled crowd of 20,000 booed her set. After the show, she canceled festival appearances in Turkey and Greece.

Apart from her touring plans, Winehouse was also reportedly working on the follow-up to her award-winning Back to Black, but a concrete release date for the album was never established.

Around the same time, several media outlets began reporting extensively on the couple's drug use and, in 2008, Fielder-Civil served time in prison after an altercation with a bar owner. During this period, Winehouse also had several run-ins with the law, including a 2007 arrest for possession of marijuana in Bergen, Norway, a "common assault" charge in early 2008; and, most famously, a May 2008 arrest stemming from a video of her smoking what appeared to be crack cocaine. She avoided jail time in each instance but, at the urging of her father, the singer made several attempts to get clean, repeatedly checking herself into rehabilitation facilities. Her last stint in rehab reportedly took place in May of 2011.

During all of this, Winehouse had also begun working on the follow-up to Back to Black, heading to the island of St. Lucia with Remi to record tracks. In July 2010, Winehouse made a surprise appearance at a Ronson show in London, flubbing the lines to the producer's song "Valerie." A few days later, she told the U.K.'s Metro newspaper that the new album was due in January followed in the footsteps of Black's retro leanings.

She recorded a version of Lesley Gore's "It's My Party" for legendary producer Quincy Jones' Q: Soul Bossa Nostra album, and was also tapped to sing with Tony Bennett on his upcoming Duets II album, which is due in September.

In the hours following her death, Winehouse's American record label, Universal Republic, said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer. Our prayers go out to Amy's family, friends and fans at this difficult time."
