Freight and logistics workers step up action in South Africa

28 September 2012

Freight and logistics workers in South Africa have this week announced plans to consolidate industrial action after employers refused to meet their pay demands.

The workers, represented by the ITF-affiliated South African Transport and Allied Workers? Union (Satawu) failed to win an agreement with employers at the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI) over pay. The employers include global delivery firms such as DHL, TNT, Fedex and UPS as well as other companies.

To date, negotiations have ended in deadlock, with employers offering wage increases far short of the workers? demands.

Satawu members are currently engaged in picketing at various workplaces and union local offices. They will also be marching in Durban from Botha park up to City Hall to hand over a memorandum announcing a continuation of the dispute to NBCRFLI officials.

Tabudi Ramakgolo, Satawu?s national freight and logistics coordinator commented: ?All parties have reached a deadlock and none of them are participating in any talks at the moment. We will use this opportunity to mobilise all our members and encourage them to unite in a clear purpose of putting as much pressure as possible on the employers to revert back to the negotiations table. We intend to ignite further sympathy and solidarity strikes from our members in sectors such as maritime and freight rail in an effort to ensure that no goods and parcels move till the road freight workers? demands are fully met.?

Golf-Woods missing out on U.S. Ryder Cup party

MEDINAH, Illinois, Sept 29 | Sun Sep 30, 2012 1:55am BST

MEDINAH, Illinois, Sept 29 (Reuters) - The United States Ryder Cup team put smiles on millions of American golf fans on Saturday but Tiger Woods was not among them.

The biennial U.S.-Europe showdown has never brought out the best in Woods but the 14-time major winner slumped to new lows at Medinah Country Club, losing all three of his matches and being benched for the first time in his Ryder Cup career.

After being relegated to the sidelines by captain Davis Love III for Saturday's morning foursomes, Woods and partner Steve Stricker returned to duty in the afternoon fourballs.

But a one-up loss to Spaniard Sergio Garcia and Briton Luke Donald left them as the only members of the 12-man American squad not to contribute a point to the U.S. cause.

As a Ryder Cup party erupted around him, Woods had the forlorn look of someone who had been left off the guest list, standing alone in the twilight with his eyes closed and hands clasped above his head absorbing yet another defeat.

"I've played well the last two afternoons and didn't get a point," Woods told reporters after watching his Ryder Cup record dip to 13-17-2. "It's tough.

"Yesterday I made a bunch of birdies and today I made five on the back nine and it just wasn't enough. Feeling good about my game but just unfortunately haven't got a point."

Woods said he supported Love's decision to sit him down for the morning matches but the break did little to energise the former-world number one as he and Stricker watched Garcia and Donald race to a four-up lead in the fourballs.

Appearing down-and-out, Woods suddenly sprung to life at the turn after missing a four-foot par putt, throwing himself into a back nine charge that featured five birdies, only to come up agonisingly short.

He birdied the 16th hole to cut the margin to one-up with two holes to play then hit his tee shot on the par-3 17th to within four feet of the hole.

He made the birdie but his momentum was halted when Donald got his tee shot even closer and also made birdie to halve the hole then Woods and Stricker both missed birdie putts on the last that would have earned them half a point.

"We fought hard, unfortunately it just wasn't enough," Woods said.

"Strick's made a huge birdie at 12. We gave ourselves two good looks on 18 and didn't get it done."

Despite his woes, Woods will get a final chance to earn a point in Sunday's singles. While Woods has fallen flat in the team events, he remains an imposing opponent in head-to-head competition with a record of 4-1-1 in Ryder Cup play.

And the former world number one is still looming as a winner with the Americans holding a commanding 10-6 advantage at the end of the second day.

"Being up four is nice," offered Woods. "We are really looking forward to going out there and hopefully... we are in a great spot right now to win the Cup." (Editing by Julian Linden)

Get Some Idea On The Advantages Of Web Hosting reviews ...

With the advent of internet and technology since the last few years a number of people who are business oriented have started using the Internet to serve their business purposes. With the cyber or internet business is getting more and more profitable every day most of all people have turned towards online business to make money while investing almost nothing. Since the last 15 years a number of organizations who are in need of cost effective hosting are skyrocketing continuously. If we consider the amount of businesses that are needed to be hosted then we can also get to see that the number of the web hosting companies or the web hosting service providers has also increased a lot as more and more individuals are turning towards this business considering it to be a lucrative one. Most of all the young entrepreneurs who are seeking to get foothold in internet business are starting with hosting service providing business.

But all web hosting companies do not create the same impact and this type of business can leave some business owners, who are involved in businesses like real estate and other instead of information technology, leave confused. Most of the time these business men waste most of their precious times in search of a standard web hosting service provider who can offer them the best deal that will fit their budget and fulfill their needs and requirements. Most of the inexperienced and ordinary service providers find it difficult to purchase the exact amount of web space or the necessary bandwidth that saves lots of money. ?Selecting the exact location of the server and the operating system along with assuring the customers that the host they have selected are reliable and capable enough to offer effective business support with the help of their qualified professionals are extremely necessary. It is quite necessary because you may find a number of examples where you can see that instead of having a thorough planning and sufficient budget many companies and businesses faced doom only because of the incapability of their web hosting service providers.

A qualified and skilled entrepreneur will surely take the advantages of the upcoming flow of the web hosting companies to develop a tailor made package that will perfectly suit his purposes and budget. But this is not at all an easy task to find the perfect hosting company or an individual. It requires lots of time, effort and hard research works.

Web hosting reviews such as Kate?s Hosting Reviews are mostly enlisted by the customers who have used their services and therefore, are ready to share their feedbacks and suggestions related the companies. All these reviews and feedbacks which in many cases are also inserted in the sites of the webhosting companies or the individuals help them to get a place of their own in the mist of the customers and in the pages of the search engines like Google, Bing etc.

Afghan 'inside' attack kills 2 Americans, 2 Afghans

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan soldier turned his gun on American troops at a checkpoint in the country's east, killing two Americans and two fellow members of Afghanistan's army in a shooting that marked both the continuance of a disturbing trend of insider attacks and the 2,000th U.S. troop death in the long-running war, officials said Sunday.

The string of insider attacks is one of the greatest threats to NATO's mission in the country, endangering a partnership key to training up Afghan security forces and withdrawing international troops.

Saturday's shooting took place at an Afghan army checkpoint just outside a joint U.S.-Afghan base in Wardak province, said Shahidullah Shahid, a provincial government spokesman. At least two Afghan soldiers died, he said.

"Initial reports indicate that a misunderstanding happened between Afghan army soldiers and American soldiers," Shahid said. He said investigators had been sent to the site to try to figure out what happened. It was not clear if the assailant was killed.

The attack happened about 5 p.m. in Sayd Abad district, Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said in an emailed statement. He did not provide further details.

NATO forces announced the assault early Sunday morning, saying only that it was "suspected insider attack" and that a NATO service member and civilian contractor were killed.

One U.S. official confirmed that the service member killed was American, while another confirmed that the civilian was also American. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the nationality of the dead had not yet been formally announced.

Afghan soldiers and policemen ? or militants in their uniforms ? have gunned down more than 50 foreign troops so far this year, eroding the trust between coalition forces and their Afghan partners. An equal number of Afghan policemen and soldiers also died in these attacks, giving them reason as well to be suspicious of possible infiltrators within their ranks.

The attacks are taking a toll on the partnership between international and Afghan forces, prompting the U.S. military to restrict operations with small-sized Afghan units earlier this month.

The close contact ? with coalition forces working side by side with Afghan troops as advisers, mentors and trainers ? is a key part of the U.S. strategy for preparing the Afghans to take the lead in security operations as the U.S. and other nations prepare to pull out their last combat troops at the end of 2014, just 27 months away.

The number of American military dead reflects an Associated Press count of those members of the armed services killed inside Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion on Oct. 7, 2001.

The propaganda of Israel and weakness of America

By?Ray Hanania

If nuclear weaponry wasn?t such a threat to humanity, the rhetorical battle between Israel and Iran would be comical and laughable.

But nuclear weapons are a threat to all mankind, not just to the arrogant who believe they and they alone count on this planet that we call Earth.

The irony is that Israel has 250 armed nuclear warheads that can be fired at any time to destroy its Arab and Muslim neighbors, including Iran. Yet, it screams at every opportunity afforded it by the biased mainstream Western media attacking Iran and declaring that Israel will prevent Iran from developing nuclear technology.

Let?s get something straight in this hypocritical rhetorical battle of hyperbole and public relations spin: Only one country in the Middle East region has nuclear weapons and that is Israel. Not Iran. Not the Arab countries. Just Israel.

Israel provokes the region through offensive policies that affront civil rights and the rule of law. Israel?s fanatical leaders continue to proclaim they will destroy anyone who challenges their power, even if the challenge is to force Israel to be accountable for its war crimes committed since its founding in 1948.

Israel, not Iran, is the country that threatens the region. It has taken, and continues to take, lands owned by Arabs. Israel, not Iran, has killed civilians.

Israel is the country that continues to call for military strikes against another foreign country while Americans ignore justice, law and principle to mindlessly soak in the Israeli propaganda.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad does not represent the Arab or the Muslim world. Many argue he doesn?t run Iran?s government. But his indictment of Israel, burdened by extreme rhetoric and wild emotional invective, resonates among the Arabs and Muslims who have been bullied, oppressed and victimized by Israel.

America is much like a police officer who watches as a friend enters and robs a store. When the store owner screams for help, he is beaten by the police officer and the thief is allowed to flee.

When it comes to Israel, American justice is based on politics not the rule of law. American justice is blind to crimes against Arabs and Muslims.

Israel steals land from Arabs and America is silent. Israel murders Arab activists calling it ?extrajudicial killing,? an admission that the killings are illegal. Israel?s government conducts itself outside of the rule of law, and exploits American ignorance and its powerful PR spin and news media manipulation and influence to prevent challenge.

I?m not saying that Ahmadinejad is any better than Israel?s rightwing fanatic leadership, a leadership that has for the past four years refused to negotiate peace just so it can expand its illegal Jewish-only settlements in the occupied West Bank. But Ahmadinejad is no worse that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It wasn?t Ahmadinejad who sent armed soldiers to assault a flotilla of boats in 2010 driven by loud-mouthed but unarmed activists, many of whom hate Israel. But hatred isn?t a crime. Isn?t that what the West keeps telling Muslims? Hatred of Muslims in the anti-Muslim video is ?free speech.?

But hatred was enough for Israel to kill nine civilians, including one American citizen. Apparently the murder of an American who criticizes Israel is not murder. Furkan Dogan, an American living in Turkey, was murdered by Israeli soldiers on the flotilla when he resisted, without a weapon, the attacking Israeli soldiers.

Rachel Corrie was another American citizen who was killed by an Israeli soldier driving an American-made Caterpillar D-9 tractor. The Israeli soldier was destroying Arab civilian homes to make room for Israeli settlers in the Gaza Strip in 2003. The soldier knew protestors including Corrie were trying to stop the destruction and saw her. He ran her over.

Justice and Israel are antonyms, words opposite in meaning to each other.

And you can?t get justice in America either if you happen to be a critic of Israel.

I support two-states, compromise and peace. I support non-violence and I oppose violence. But I don?t support hypocrisy.

It is shameful to watch as President Barack Obama cowers under Israel?s PR onslaught, afraid to tell the American people the truth because it might cost him his re-election.

Obama?s actions are an admission that extremism is more powerful than truth!

Obama walked out of the United Nations because he didn?t want to hear criticism of Israel. Americans tolerate criticism of every other country in the world, including of some of the most oppressive regimes in the world like China. But criticize Israel and America won?t tolerate it at all.

We?ll even go to war for Israel, at the cost of American lives. We already give Israel billions of dollars in funds every year, money that could otherwise feed Americans who continue to starve on the streets of America.

But America won?t stand up to Israel. By refusing to stand up to Israel, America empowers megalomaniacs like Ahmadinejad who speak to the injustices caused by Israel, injustices no one else will address. American justice truly is blind.

Silvi's Southside Kitchen

Silvi's Southside Kitchen

Silvi?s Southside Kitchen

By: Laura Szafranski

I am a native South Texan who has lived in Pittsburgh for around ten years and while I enjoy the different ethnic foods found here, there is nothing like food from home. And while I am a good cook who can make all the food from home, sometimes you would rather have someone else make it.

My husband, a South Side native, and I are always on the look out for any new Mexican restaurant. For me cause I miss the taste of home, for him because he swears that he would move to Texas just for the food.

A few days ago we read an article about Silvi?s Southside Kitchen. A new Mexican restaurant owned and operated by a fellow Texan. Bingo, I thought, maybe someone who makes food like what I grew up on and crave. So we searched for their website online and found the menu to be what we wanted. But the question was, would it taste like home.

Since I get out of work late on Friday?s it was the perfect time to try Silvi?s out. After circling two blocks between E. Carson and Sarah Street for a bit, we finally found a close parking space. I was excited to try this new restaurant and I hoped that it would, at long last, be what I have been searching for.

When we walked in the door, there were more tables empty than taken, but I never take that into account in a Mexican restaurant. Long ago I learned that there are many people who fear Mexican food based on poor experiences at other restaurants. I had to see for myself.

We seated ourselves at a booth and were soon greeted by a very nice man who turned out to be the owner, Dmitri Avila. He took our drink order while we read the menu (soft drinks only, they are BYOB though). As we read, there was wonderful Mariachi and other Spanish music in the background. Not so loud as you couldn?t hear your dinner partner or even yourself, but just enough for ambiance.

It?s a good menu, not so many items in each sections as to completely confuse you, but enough to give a good variety. As a starter we chose the Chips and Salsa ($2.99). You are given the option of salsa or Pico De Gallo. We chose the salsa and it was wonderful. The chips were fresh from the oil, hot and seasoned just right. Extra crispy and crunchy so beware of falling crumbs on your clothes. The salsa was the perfect blend of spice, tomato, onion and chile. And it had the perfect amount of heat for me, hot. It wasn?t, as my father would call, tomato marmalade.

The rest of the menu has Soups and Salads, Burgers and Sandwiches and Little Bit of Mexico, just the section we were looking for. While I wanted to try everything listed, there was one particular item I really wanted to try, the Carne Guisada ($9.99). I guess the best way to describe Carne Guisada would be the Mexican version of Beef Stroganoff only without noodles and the gravy is spiced with salt, pepper, garlic, cumin and tomato sauce and slow cooked for hours so the beef was unbelievably tender. I was in heaven, pure heaven. THIS IS WHAT I WANTED.

Silvi's

Silvi's

While I was mooning over my food, my husband was digging into his Chicken Acapulco ($9.99). A grilled chicken breast coated with cheese sauce and smothered in pepper and onions and topped with Queso Fresco and slices of avocado. And while he wished that the cheese sauce had been a little thicker, he said the chicken was perfectly cooked and heartily dug in with gusto and enjoyed every bit.

All the Mexican entrees come with rice and beans. I know that at many other restaurants these sides can be as boring and plain as paste, but they were wonderful. The rice was seasoned nicely, not just cooked in a tomato base to give it color and was cooked just right, not a mushy red pile on our plates. The pinto beans were homemade and cooked to perfection, not from a can or refried into a soupy mess.

With nothing on the menu over $9.99, this wonderful representation of Mexican food is easily accessible to all.

Through our whole meal, Mr. Avila was the sole person on the floor serving tables as the slowly began to fill up after we arrived. Service began to slow some since he was the only server, but he was always patient and quick to get you anything you needed while he took orders, filled drinks and brought out food, always with a smile and a thank you.

While we ate I asked him what part of Texas he was from. Turns out he grew up 80 miles from my home town. While in Pennsylvania that may seem far, inTexas, that means we are practically neighbors.

With our stomachs pleasantly full and our bill of just under $30 paid, Mr. Avila thanked us for coming and told us to have a good night.

We will most definitely be returning to Silvi?s Southside Kitchen.
