Shootings leave 6 dead in already jittery Seattle

(AP) ? A city already anxious about a recent spate of shootings was rattled further when a man walked into an arts cafe near a Seattle university and opened fire, fatally wounding four people. Police say he later killed a woman during a carjacking before shooting himself.

As officers closed in during a widespread manhunt late Wednesday afternoon, the suspect put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. He died at a local hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The five victims brought the number of homicides in Seattle so far this year to 21, matching the total for all of last year, and left city leaders wondering what could be done to stop the bloodshed.

"Two tragic shootings today ... have shaken this city," Mayor Mike McGinn said at a news conference. "It follows on the heels of multiple, tragic episodes of gun violence that have occurred throughout the city."

In the last month, there had already been two random killings. A man died last week when he was hit by a stray bullet as he drove, and a woman was killed in a drive by shooting in late April. No arrests have been made,

Police did not publicly name the suspect in Wednesday's shootings, but the Seattle Times identified him as Ian Lee Stawicki, 40, of Seattle, citing unidentified law enforcement sources.

Andrew Stawicki, 29, of Ellensburg, told the Times he recognized a photo shown on TV newscasts of the alleged gunman as his brother Ian. Andrew Stawicki said Ian Stawicki was mentally ill.

"It's no surprise to me this happened," he told the newspaper. "We could see this coming. Nothing good is going to come with that much anger inside of you."

A phone number for Andrew Stawicki rang busy when The Associated Press tried to reach him for comment.

Gunfire erupted about 11 a.m. at Cafe Racer, a restaurant and music venue north of the University of Washington.

Police quickly released two photos from inside the cafe, apparently taken from a security camera. One showed a man walking into the establishment, with a woman nearby reading a book and people chatting at the nearby cafe bar. Another photo about a minute later showed stools overturned, and the man standing and holding what appeared to be a handgun.

Two men died at the cafe, and a third man and a woman from the cafe died at a hospital.

Police said it appeared the gunman fled to the First Hill neighborhood near downtown, where he fatally shot a woman in a parking lot and stole her SUV.

He then drove the SUV to West Seattle and ditched it, leaving a gun in the car. After officers found the vehicle, they flooded that area with uniformed and plainclothes officers.

A detective spotted the suspect late in the afternoon and called for backup and a SWAT team, Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said. As those officers arrived, the man shot himself, he said.

A King County medical examiner's spokeswoman said her office might be able to release the dead victims' identifications Thursday.

One man wounded in the cafe shooting was reported in critical but stable condition late Wednesday at Harborview Medical Center following surgery earlier in the day. Hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg confirmed his name as Leonard Meuse. Meuse's father, Raymond Meuse, told the Times his son was shot in the jaw and armpit but was expected to survive.

Evan Hill, who lives above the building where the shooting happened, said the cafe was an artists' collective and performance space.

"It's the strangest place to think of a shooting," said Hill, who heard four to five shots. He said he ran to his balcony and called 911, but didn't see a suspect.

On a street corner across from the cafe, friends of the victims gathered by the ivy-covered wall of an apartment building. Some collapsed in grief. The cafe's owner hugged them and commiserated.

Units of police officers marched by with rifles and shotguns, knocking on doors and checking driveways and yards in the neighborhood of single-family, bungalow-style homes, restaurants and businesses.

During the manhunt, Roosevelt High School, Eckstein Middle School and Greenlake Elementary were locked down, according to the school district.

In other recent violence to hit Seattle, a bystander was wounded near the Space Needle Saturday when he was struck by a bullet that police say was fired by a gang member involved in a dispute with another man. Later that night, about 60 shots were fired in drive-by shootings at four houses. No one was hit.

Besides a plan to increase the number of officers on patrol in high-crime areas, police are urging people with information about shootings to come forward.

They also said Seattleites could expect an increased police presence in the near future.

City Councilman Bruce Harrell said leaders needed to consider everything ? from changing laws to addressing the culture of violence.

"If we are to be honest, there's no easy fix," he said.

Facebook 1.9.3 (for Android)

Props to Facebook for listening to user feedback. When Facebook released its second major update to the Android app last April, it controversially added three, non-removable icons to people's app drawers. The icons were intended as shortcuts for users to post pictures or send messages via Facebook. Design-wise it was a bad, business-driven move, and within the first week users widely condemned the update. Android users have enough bloatware to contend with!

Facebook v1.9.3 for Android (free) omits the bloatware and fixes some bugs. As a result it's now perhaps the best mobile Facebook experience, compared to Facebook for the iPhone, Windows Phone, and PlayStation Vita. At the same time, loading pages feels slower than ever.

Android-centric Interface
Most of you know what Facebook is, so I'm just going to highlight all the mobile nuances. After installing the app, you're given the option to sync your FB contacts to your phone's contacts.

The app populates your screen with your news feed, apart from shortcuts up top for Notifications, Messages, Inbox, and Status updates. You can slide across to pull out a scrollable menu of shortcuts, including buttons for your profile, photos, messages, events, friends, apps, and groups. Facebook Chat is in there too, but it is essentially a replica of your inbox.?

Notably, in Android you can share content from within the app. This function is missing in Facebook for all other mobile platforms.?

Refreshing news feeds and loading data within Facebook for Android feels sluggish at times, but definitely less so with this update. I performed a simple real-life refresh test on a Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.0.2, with Wi-Fi switched on. It took 4 seconds to refresh my Facebook news feed in the Android app compared to 5.3 seconds after the previous update. This result is comparable to the iPhone 4 on Wi-Fi (4 seconds).

One thing the app could improve upon is implementing CodeGenerator, a spiffy mobile security feature that is only available to Android users?iPhone users have another workaround. CodeGenerator can be found within Account Settings, and simply prompts a user to enter a 16-digit code to log into Facebook from an unrecognized device. I couldn't activate it within the Android app, and was directed outside the app to set it up. A less determined user would probably drop the idea altogether.

Keep the Updates Coming
Despite the frustratingly slow load time, Facebook version 1.9 for Android is still the best way to access Facebook on an Android device. Other Facebook clients, such as Friendcaster, offer much more customization to your Facebook skins and such, but I don't know anyone who uses it. Facebook's Android client is already pretty darn good.

Bloodletting Makes Comeback for Metabolic Syndrome

Leeches and lances might seem like prescriptions from the past. But bloodletting might be back in vogue. A small study shows that losing a little blood might improve cardiovascular health for obese people who also have what?s called metabolic syndrome.

The study tracked 33 patients with metabolic syndrome?defined by the presence of some of an assortment of conditions, such as high cholesterol, hypertension and insulin resistance. Researchers took 300 milliliters of blood from the patients, a little less than the one pint standard donation, with a repeat treatment a month later.

After six weeks, treated adults had lower blood pressure than the control group. Glucose levels also decreased, which suggests limited blood removal might improve metabolic health. The findings are in the journal BMC Medicine. [Khosrow Houschyar et al., "Effects of phlebotomy-induced reduction of body iron stores on metabolic syndrome: results from a randomized clinical trial"]

The researchers think that the blood loss reduces iron levels. And excess iron in the blood has been tied to many metabolic syndrome ailments.

The FDA has okayed leeches for some procedures. Which could lead patients to thank their doctors for a treatment that sucks.

U.S. student killed while filming violence in Syria

Shaam News Network / AFP - Getty Images

Bassel Shahade, 28, a filmmaker and graduate student at the University of Syracuse, was killed Monday during clashes between regime troops and protesters in the embattled city of Homs.

By Isolde Raftery, msnbc.com

Just five months ago, Bassel Shahade, a film student at Syracuse University, was explaining to the hosts of Democracy Now! that he had to speak quietly. He had hunkered down in an apartment in Damascus, Syria and worried that soldiers outside could hear him. ??

?Thousands of detainees are still in the prisons,? Shahade said in a low voice. ?Among them are tens of my friends. They are not terrorists. They are filmmakers, journalists, doctors, lawyers. They are very high intellectual people and activists.?

In the studio, host Amy Goodman worried for Shahade?s safety. ?We can hear you just fine, Bassel, but we want you to be very careful,? Goodman said. ?You can tell us you can?t talk. That is fine.?

Shahade, 28, was killed Monday while filming the aftermath of attacks by government security forces. The United Nations believes that 9,000 people, most of them civilians,?have been killed during the 14-month uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Video: Shelling in Syria intensifies

Amer Mater, a friend of Shahade, told The Associated Press that Shahade was in Houla to film the aftermath of violence over the weekend that killed 108 people, including at least 32 children.

The bloodied bodies of children, some with their skulls split open, were shown in footage posted to YouTube purporting to show the victims of the shelling in the central town on Friday.?The sound of wailing filled the room.

Houla Media Center / EPA

Houla Media Center, a Syrian citizen journalist group, provided this image of image of bodies covered in white shrouds following the massacre in Houla, Syria. Syrian authorities deny responsibility.

Clinton condemns Syria massacre: Assad?s ?rule by murder? must end

Shahade was filming a documentary, Mater told the AP, and had trained other activists as videographers to document the attacks.

Syracuse University?Chancellor Nancy Cantor?called Shahade's death a tragedy.

?His death is also a tragedy for the Syrian people, who have suffered many months of tragic violence as they seek greater freedom for their nation,? Cantor said.

Friends took to Facebook to mourn the loss of their friend. A man named Waheeb wrote that he had cried looking at his friend?s photos. He said that Shahade ?loved Syria and the people around him.?

?I remember him showing me proudly an article by his uncle ridiculing sectarianism and ideas of religious divisions between Christians and Muslims in Syria,? Waheeb wrote. ?He believed that neither sect, ethnicity or religion mattered in relations between people.?

Shahade?s interview with Democracy Now! took place on Dec. 29, 2011, four days after Christmas. He told the hosts that tension was rising and violence increasing. A baby cried in the background.

?You cannot walk after three-o-clock in the city. You?ll be shot,? Shahade said. ?And you don?t know from where it will come?from the army or from the locals. Like, it?s a total chaos there.?

He told of a friend, a doctor, who was shot while trying to cross the border into Turkey.

?He was providing help for protesters,? Shahade said. ?And they followed him, and he tried to cross the borders to Turkey, and they shot him on the border.?

Make your business card fridge magnets unique | Advertising Help ...

Last week was refreshing and fulfilling because I happened to learn about the utility value of business card fridge magnets. The term was easier to understand, but it never came to my thoughts to replace the paper business cards with business card refrigerator magnets.? I actually got bonded to this thought of extending magnetic business cards after reading the blog by a local businessman ? Mark Stephanopoulos.? Throughout his blog there were references about how this wonder card helped him to establish right contacts with the people. Here is how he described the whole experience of dealing with these cards -

Visible ? Visible

Yeah, they are everywhere. I am happy that many of my clients have proudly displayed my identity over their refrigerator door. It is a good sign because refrigerator is an essential home appliance, which mobilizes the traffic within a home. Any xyz magnet affixed on its stand higher chances of getting noticed whenever people open and close the fridge for fetching some food items, vegetables, drinks, and so on.

I will never leave your side

This heading seemed strange, but it was worth reading. The reason cited for choosing this title is because the writer himself could feel that investing in a magnetic business card is a best thing that ever happened to him. He added that regular business cards are dumped or pushed to the back of the cupboard or crumpled because people find them annoying. Magnetic cards have a special charm and people will not think of throwing them out for various reasons. Therefore, you can make a wise investment by opting for a magnetic business card which offers 24 / 7/ 365 day promotion to your business. Also, it remains affixed to a place for long time period. That was pretty convincing reason what he gave to his choices.

Ease to Make-up
Mark noted that these magnetic fridge business cards were easy to be dressed. Oops! The meaning is they can be customized easily according to specific requirements and needs. One can opt to add their favorite photos, recipes, logos, business contact data, calendar or any other business information. Color, layout, size, images and other parameters of such custom promotional magnet can be easily managed. Mark says even a business card can make you a designer because you can create a one easily without much dependence on any additional graphical tools.

So, taking cue from Marks? experience and combined experience of some other friends, I would like to conclude that the next time, when you think of promoting your business to mass, select business card fridge magnets because it is one of the perfect low-cost business advertising tools of the modern times!

(AP) ? For more than a decade, whatever the state of her health or her game, no matter the opponent or arena, Serena Williams always won first-round matches at Grand Slam tournaments.

Always.

Until Tuesday at the French Open. Until Williams came within two points of victory nine times, yet remarkably failed to close the deal against unheralded and 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France.

Until a theatrical, 23-minute final game filled with 30 points, more than enough for an entire set, featuring ebbs and flows, high-pressure shotmaking and nerves ? and even thunderous protests from the crowd when the chair umpire docked Razzano a point. That look-away-and-you-miss-something game included five wasted break points for Williams, and seven match points that she saved, until Razzano finally converted her eighth, 3 hours and 3 minutes after they began playing.

All told, until Tuesday, Williams was 46 for 46 in openers at tennis' top venues, and those encounters tended to be routine and drama-free, befitting a woman so good that the goal ? and 13 times, the end result ? was a major championship.

Not this time. Now Williams' first-round Grand Slam record is 46-1 after as stunning a denouement as could be in a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 loss to Razzano on the red clay at Roland Garros.

The fifth-seeded Williams, considered by many a pre-tournament favorite, led 5-1 in the second-set tiebreaker, before dropping the next 13 points in a row. Suddenly, her shots didn't always carry their usual oomph; her court coverage was ordinary.

"I've been through so much in my life, and ... I'm not happy, by no means," said Williams, her eyes welling with tears. "I just always think things can be worse."

The 30-year-old American returned to action last year after missing about 10 months because of a series of health scares, including two foot operations and blood clots, a scary stretch she says altered her worldview.

The rowdy spectators in Court Philippe Chatrier would have been pulling for Razzano anyway, of course, because of her citizenship. But their support was particularly strong because of her recent heartbreak, well-known in France: Razzano's fiance ? Stephane Vidal, also her longtime coach ? died at age 32 of a brain tumor in May 2011, a little more than a week before her first-round match at last year's French Open.

He had encouraged her to go ahead and enter the tournament, so she did, honoring his memory by stepping on court to play, a black ribbon pinned to her shirt. When she walked out of the locker room for what turned out to be a straight-set loss, she wore a gold chain that Vidal had given her as a Valentine's Day gift a few years earlier.

"Honestly, the past is the past," Razzano said Tuesday, when she dealt with leg cramps starting in the second set. "I think now I did my mourning. I feel good today. It took time."

Said Williams: "I know of her story and her husband. We all have stories. I mean, I almost died, and Venus is struggling herself. So, you know, it's life. You know, it just depends on how you deal with it. She obviously is dealing with it really well."

Williams' exit was by far the most newsworthy development on Day 3 at Roland Garros, where Maria Sharapova won 6-0, 6-0, and Rafael Nadal began his bid for a record seventh French Open championship with a straight-set victory.

Williams entered Tuesday having won her previous 17 matches, all on clay. She withdrew before what would have been her most recent match, a semifinal at the Italian Open on May 19, citing a bad lower back, but said on Friday she was better, then refused to place blame on that injury after being beaten by Razzano.

"No, no, no. I didn't feel anything abnormal," said Williams, who counts the 2002 French Open among her 13 Grand Slam singles trophies. "I was 100 percent healthy."

Occasionally after losing points, Williams would bend forward and lean on her racket frame, as though perhaps stretching her lower back. She also clutched at that spot and whacked her racket there after miscues.

And there were plenty of those, 47 in all, 11 more than her foe. That's where Williams put the emphasis when trying to fathom how she let her big lead slip away. From 5-1 in the tiebreaker, she lost the next six points to end that set, then the first seven points of the third.

"I tried. I kept going for my shots, which always works for me," Williams said. "It didn't work out today."

It sure seemed she'd be OK when up 5-4 in the second set and at 15-30 on Razzano's serve. The match was about 1? hours old ? only halfway through, it would turn out ? and Williams was two points from ending it. Razzano responded with an ace. At 6-5 in that set, Razzano showed real jitters, double-faulting twice in a row to again make it 15-30. Again, Williams was two points away. And again, Razzano held serve to extend the match.

Then came the tiebreaker, with Williams apparently in control. At 5-2, Razzano hit a shot near the baseline that Williams let go, thinking it was out. But the chair umpire, Eva Asderaki, ruled the ball was in. Asderaki overruled a call on the next point, too, helping Razzano.

Asderaki would play a key role, first warning Razzano for hindrance, then twice awarding a point to Williams because the Frenchwoman grunted loudly while exerting herself during extended exchanges. Williams found the whole thing sort of bemusing: Asderaki was the chair umpire who immediately ? with no warning ? took a point away from Williams during her loss to Sam Stosur in September's U.S. Open final.

"Well, you know, she's not a favorite amongst the tour," Williams said. "I just really had a flashback there."

A surging Razzano led 5-0 in the third set, but Williams ? as gritty a competitor as there is in her sport ? didn't go quietly. She got within 5-3, and that's when the epic game came, as much a test of will as anything.

Razzano, looking gassed, grabbed at her legs between points and double-faulted to make it 30-all. A 13-stroke point followed, and Asderaki interrupted play to make it 30-40 because of hindrance. The partisan fans jeered, whistled and banged their palms against the stadium's plastic green seats (they booed Asderaki when she walked off at match's end).

That set up Williams' first break point, but she sent a return wide. Moments later, Razzano had her first match point but ? gulp! ? double-faulted. That established a pattern.

Eventually, on the 12th deuce of the game, Williams dropped a forehand into the net. And on match point No. 8, she sailed a backhand long.

That was it. Razzano skipped to the net for a handshake, thrilled to have beaten Williams ? and to have avoided what would have been her 21st first-round departure in 47 major tournaments.

Williams' shoulders slumped. For the first time in a Grand Slam career that began at the 1998 Australian Open, when she was 16, Williams heads home after only one match.

And this was one she had in her grasp.

"I never really feel anything slipping away or anything," Williams said. "I just felt I couldn't get a ball in play."

Rick Ayers: Some Anti-war Reflections on Memorial Day

Across the country this memorial day, in parks and at parades, before sporting events and at graduation ceremonies, the hypocrisy of paunchy old men extolling the glories of warfare was on obscene display. And President Obama's performance at the Vietnam Memorial Wall was another pathetic case of pandering to an idiotic narrative of a military establishment bent on creating a state of permanent war.

A few crucial points must be reiterated:

The opposition to the Vietnam War was not some unfeeling hippies who disrespected the troops. By the 1970's, the heart and soul of the anti-war movement was the veterans and the active duty GI's. Slowly, over the years, the warmongers have tried to rewrite that history into a lie about the poor veteran and the unfeeling peaceniks. The researcher Jerry Lembcke, by the way, looked into every reported story of GI's being spat upon when arriving home and found not one single credible case. See his book The Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam.

Nevertheless, while we in the anti-war movement love our veterans (certainly more than the Veteran's Administration which is criminal in its neglect and disgusting in its avoidance of diagnoses of PTSD) we cannot soften what they did (in Vietnam or Iraq or Afghanistan) with terms like "service." At its best, the Vietnam anti-war veterans were not just talking about how hard it was on them but they were coming to terms with the horrors of what they did over there. Yes, the ones who should be held accountable should be the top brass and the politicians. But everyone in this life has moral responsibility for his or her actions -- even if they are done under horrible circumstances. We certainly maintain that standard when considering German soldiers in World War II. Following orders is not a legal excuse. And certainly the lowest infantrymen should not be punished but they do have some moral reflection to do.

Which brings me to this horrid logic of the public discourse on war. Every politician, of any stripe, insists that they honor the soldiers for fighting. Honor them. Because they showed valor. And patriotism. Even when the war was wrong, dead wrong, we must honor their "service." What we get into here is a logical fallacy of death justifying death. Yes, the Iraq war was criminal, based on manufactured evidence, seeking the expansion of empire, creating an exponential increase in the number of terrorists, slaughtering 600,00 civilians, leading to 20 GI suicides a day, and wrecking the world economy. It has been an obscenity and the NATO-US war on Afghanistan is just an extension of the obscenity. Since no one any more can argue for these policies, they argue that we must honor the dead. They have done something marvelous, we are told. And those who were right, who opposed the war? Riffraff.

While we are looking at the big picture, let's admit that we have turned away from a universal or even selective draft system so that the war does not touch the privileged. The U.S. now sends its poor and working class youth to fight the wars so that life can go on in the privileged communities with no real pain or consequence. Young people rush to the military to escape the bloody streets of their communities, which are ravished by drugs, unemployment, and prisons. They are escaping an economy that has completely marginalized them and schools that are useless in solving their problems. They go to prison if they join gangs in their communities but are welcomed into the biggest and most violent gang of all, the U.S. military. Then they are held up as heroes by the very ones who put them in the predicament that got them killed.

This is the kind of death's head war culture we saw in the Roman legions in the last century of that empire. And it is the kind of mindless patriotism that has shamed and degraded our country.

Let us honor veterans by speaking the truth. They are tough enough to take it. And the veterans, who were tricked into fighting a criminal war by the lies of recruiters, deserve better than to be used once again as rallying points for the recruitment of new cannon fodder.

HP, Sony and Toshiba have already outed their new offerings for the back-to-school season, and now Dell is stepping up to the plate with announcements of its own. First up is the XPS One 27 all-in-one. As the name would suggest, it has a 27-inch screen, and the resolution is an impressive 2560 x 1440 pixels. All configurations are going to ship with Ivy Bridge processors (Core i5 or i7) with up to 16GB of memory, and the standard 1TB 7,200RPM hard drive can be swapped out for a 2TB HDD or 32GB SSD. Meanwhile, Waves MaxxAudio 4, Infinity-branded speakers, a Blu-ray drive and optional 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT640M GPU memory (upgradeable from integrated Intel graphics) up this machine's multimedia cred. An optional internal TV tuner will also be offered. Wrapping things up, there are four USB 3.0 sockets, two USB 2.0 ports with power charge, audio out, HDMI, VGA, mic and headphone jacks and an 8-in-1 memory card reader. The XPS One 27 starts at $1,399, and while it's available in Asia starting today, it's not expected to hit the US for a few weeks.

What Caused 6-Year-Old's Stroke?

Six-year-old Erica Wilcox woke up one fall morning in 2011 and told her parents her right hand felt "fizzy."

The first-grader was healthy and active, even running cross-country at her elementary school, so her parents, Dan and Leann Wilcox, of Toledo, Ohio, didn't think much of it.

"Honestly, we kind of wrote it off as her just sleeping on her arm wrong," Dan Wilcox said.

They had no idea their 6-year-old daughter had had a stroke.

"If you would have told me when I was watching her run on the track that a few days later I'd be taking her to the hospital for a stroke, I'd have never believed it," Wilcox said. "But there were warning signs there."

Many people hear "stroke" and think only older adults, perhaps with heart disease or other underlying conditions, are stricken. But children can also suffer from strokes, although they are rare. Doctors estimate that about 6 out of 100,000 children have a stroke each year. Stroke is one of the top 10 causes of death for children in the U.S.

The cause of Erica's stroke made it even more unusual. Erica has Moyamoya, a rare condition in which the vessels feeding blood to the brain become narrowed over time as the walls of the arteries get thicker. Sensing the lower flow of blood, the body will try to compensate by sprouting new webs of smaller blood vessels to bypass the blockage, creating what the Japanese call Moyamoya, meaning "puff of smoke," on brain imaging scans.

Moyamoya primarily affects children and teens, who are usually unaware that their arteries are silently narrowing, choking off blood to their brains. Dr. Mark Bain, a neurosurgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, said often the condition is diagnosed only when a child comes to the hospital after having a stroke.

"A lot of times, the signs will be very subtle, like numbness or tingling in the limbs," Bain said. "It's such a rare thing to have a stroke in children that a lot of the time, people don't diagnose it right away."

Weeks after Erica awoke with "fizziness" in her hand, Leann Wilcox was helping Erica with her homework, and noticed that she was using her left hand to write, even though she was right-handed. When Wilcox asked her to hold her pencil in her right hand, Erica said she couldn't. Hours later, Erica told her parents that she couldn't put her clothes on after taking a shower. By the time the Wilcoxes got to the hospital 10 minutes from their home, Erica couldn't move her lower arm at all.

"It was unbelievably scary," Dan Wilcox said.

Wilcox said Erica's doctors were initially perplexed and, spotting the "puff of smoke" blood vessels on her brain scans, thought that she had a brain tumor. But more tests revealed Erica's stroke and Moyamoya.

Doctors understand very little about the causes of Moyamoya, although a genetic basis for the disease is suspected. Bain said blood-thinning drugs like aspirin can be a short-term solution, but ultimately the best solution is surgery to try to restore the brain's blood flow.

Doctors help the brain get the blood it needs with the help of pieces of muscle, a surgical procedure called EDAMS. Surgeons take part of the chewing muscle on the side of the head and place it across the brain, securing it with a small piece of bone from the jaw. Bain said just how the procedure works is still something of a mystery.

"We think what happens is the muscle prompts the brain to have some kind of chemical-mediated response so that the brain gives off a factor that allows blood vessels to grow," Bain said.

Auto insurance rates and car types

Some car owners tend to get surprised when they learn about different insurance rates for different car types. From their point of view, it doesn?t matter whether it?s a small car or a hot rod as long as they have a good driving record and don?t get in trouble in traffic. Even so, for auto insurance providers, it?s a whole distinct perspective and they will charge you with different premiums depending on the type of car you?re trying to insure. In this perspective, you should bear in mind the following characteristics of each car type and make your decisions correctly if you want your auto insurance budget to be limited:

Small cars

Small cars are generally quite cheap and rather comfortable in the conditions of a big city with heavy traffic. They typically have low engine volumes, top speed, get stolen quite rarely and are inexpensive to handle at repair. Nevertheless, auto insurance can sometimes be a bit costly for small cars because they tend to get damaged very bad during accidents. The laws of physics aren?t on small cars? side during collisions because the smaller object tends to get the most damage regardless of the safety features the manufacturer has included. Due to this costly claims tend to arise more often with such vehicles, and the insurers respond with respective pricing.

Medium sized cars and family vehicles

Medium class cars are typically regarded as the safest and the cheapest to insure. Of course, it depends on the particular make and model, but the general rule is that these cars are quite safe, have low repair costs and theft rates, and tend to get damaged much less than smaller vehicles during an accident. As a result, you will usually get the best auto insurance rates for this car type.

SUVs

SUVs are certainly very comfortable and give you a whole different perspective in traffic. However, it?s the size that we all love that can be a problem with these vehicles. Due to their size and increased mass as compared to other vehicle types SUVs tend to produce more damage during accidents, especially involving other cars. The third party liability in case of an SUV is likely to be higher because the other car tends to get damaged quite bad and there are likely to be injuries as well. Added to the higher repair costs for such vehicles SUVs are usually more expensive to insure.

Sports cars

Sports cars often seem as an advantageous option for car buyers since they are both cool and cheap. However, when it comes to insuring a typical sports car, you will actually have a hard time finding cheap auto insurance because insurers tend to classify such cars as high risk. Increased top speed, engine volume, elevated theft and accident rates as well as the likelihood to produce a very serious car crash all contribute to expensive auto insurance rates for sports vehicles.

Luxury vehicles

It?s logic that expensive luxury cars will cost more to insure than other car types. Nevertheless, it?s not because they are costlier to purchase ? insurers have other reasons to charge higher rates for such vehicles. First of all, they are usually very costly to repair, often requiring exclusive and overpriced repair parts that are hard to find in an ordinary repair shop. Moreover, such vehicles are often targeted by car thieves and burglars due to their value and exclusivity. So don?t expect to get cheap auto insurance for any luxury car.
