According to the New York Times, European cities are becoming inimical to drivers and amicable to pedestrians, as they attempt to control pollution, decrease heat trapping emissions and improve public health.

The United States remains intensely car friendly -- and pedestrian hostile. And that says a lot about our public safety, health, future obesity epidemic and how seriously we believe in global climate change -- as well as much we value life.

Let me provide an intensely local and yet generalizable example. 24 seconds -- not 24 hours -- that's how long you've got on the traffic shot-clock to cross 6 rows of cars on the main street of my home town, Sarasota, if you wish to reach the grounds of our main regional hospital. It's only when I safely arrive on the far sidewalk I realize I'm publicly thanking them for the privilege of crossing the street.

People do stop at crosswalks when they see orange jacketed crossing guards standing up for children attending school. The city I live in has an average age of 55, and like many Florida communities, many elderly people. Never have I seen a police officer hold off everyday traffic to aid an elderly person in a wheelchair or with walker to get across any avenue. In the suburbs of New York, my elderly mother sometimes makes it through one quiet line of stopped traffic only to feel the wind of cars and SUVs leaving her immobilized and vulnerable in the middle of the crosswalk.

Health and Money

People like to walk -- if it's safe. Pedestrian districts are among the most famed attractions of many great urban centers.

In Britain, the differences in survival between the poorest and highest socio-economic groups become halved when people have more greensward. People get more healthy when they have places to move around.

Americans now lead the world in average body mass index, and even ten years ago averaged a BMI of about 28. Many researchers don't think we will get that number down unless people engage in one of the simplest physical activity -- walking.

Obesity does not just cost health care dollars. More weight means more weight to carry around. Every pound added to the American population probably adds a couple of billion dollars in transportation costs. Weighty people need more food, which also requires far more energy to create and transport.

It's an environmental issue -- walkers pollute less than cars, and car pollution increases chronic lung disease.

It's a national security issue -- America has been involved in wars in the Middle East for the past 10 years (you don't see us intervening in the Congo, where perhaps 5 million have died.)

All these things are connected.

Counties and cities are desperate for funds. Enforcing pedestrian laws, particularly with cameras at crosswalks, could benefit crimped budgets and the public health.

NEW YORK ? Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom has a more serious leg injury that will require surgery, and the colt won't race again this year.

The colt's ownership, Team Valor International, said in a statement Wednesday that a second set of X-rays has revealed Animal Kingdom has a slab fracture in his left hind leg just above the small fracture to the cannon bone found two weeks ago.

Animal Kingdom will have a screw inserted to compress the fracture during surgery on Thursday at New Bolton Research Center in Kennett Square, Pa. The colt will then return to his home at Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md., for 90 days of rehab.

Man, their "conversation" was awkward to watch. So much silence. Minus 13.

For a girl he says is not attractive and isn't worth his time, Ashley sure did elicit a bunch of longing stares and leg-touching from Bentley. Plus 7.

It's not clear how, but Ashley had a sudden epiphany that she's dealing with a Grade A douchenozzle and peaced out rather emphatically. Plus 9.

New York, London Tops in Global Influence

New York, New York is once again the most influential city in the world, along with London, England (a close second).

New York City reigns as the most influential city in the world for yet another year, according to the annual Knight Frank Global Cities Survey. The survey, which seeks to identify trends in global political and economic distributions, posted The Big Apple as a top-ranker for its economic activity, as well as the influence of its citizens and organizations. Six other American cities joined NYC as some of the world?s most important.

New York was followed sequentially on the list by London, Paris, Tokyo and Brussels, which cities rounded out the top five slots. The preponderance of Western cities on the lists was sound, with Paris offering the best quality of life, and Washington D.C. still tops in global political power. Yet the upward march of a number of Eastern cities, particularly in Asia, signals a massive shift in traditional power dynamics, and solidifies the rising influence and economic power of Brazil, Russia, India and China (also known as the ?BRIC? nations).

A projection included in the report of 2020?s potential leading cities still tacks NYC to the number one post, but by a thinning margin over emerging superstar cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore and Mumbai. Superb economic growth in the regions surrounding these metropolises adds to their international cache, and influxes of investor capital promise to improve quality of life through high employment, tax revenues, and infrastructure improvements. The shifting cast of prominent players on the world stage is evident by the 2020 supposition, which sees only three Western cities within the top-ten, versus the six on 2011?s list.

Other United States cities appearing on the list of most influential cities included:

The Knight Frank Global Cities Survey has been released annually since 2008, and is compiled for the use of investors looking to stay on top of global trends. The cities were ranked according to their level of economic activity, their political power, their quality of life, and their general cache of knowledge and influence.

Animal welfare strategy moves ahead

Agriculture Minister David Carter has today announced steps to further improve New Zealand?s animal welfare system.

An advisory group is being formed to oversee the development of a national animal welfare strategy, to feed into a review of the Animal Welfare Act.

"New Zealand has one of the best animal welfare systems in the world, but we are always looking at improvement. The Act is now more than a decade old and needs to reflect changing practices and attitudes," says Mr Carter.

"The appointment of an advisory group made up of people with a range of animal health and welfare backgrounds will ensure a national strategy is developed that will stand the test of time."

The strategy will capture the views of stakeholders with animal welfare interests, identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current system and establish a vision for New Zealand?s animal welfare system in 2030.

"This Government is working hard to maintain this country?s good reputation for animal welfare. The development of a national strategy and review of the Act are further proof of our commitment to animal welfare," Mr Carter says.

The final strategy and proposed legislative changes are likely to be finalised mid-2012.

UK jobless figure falls sharply

UK unemployment fell 88,000 in the three months to April this year, to 2.43 million, latest data shows.

The unemployment rate was 7.7%, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), down from 7.9% in the previous quarter.

However, the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance in May rose faster than expected.

The claimant count increased by 19,600 to 1.49 million, the biggest such rise since July 2009.

Hedge funds ?grabbing land? in Africa

Hedge funds are behind ?land grabs? in Africa to boost their profits in the food and biofuel sectors, a US think-tank says.

In a report, the Oakland Institute said hedge funds and other foreign firms had acquired large swathes of African land, often without proper contracts.

It said the acquisitions had displaced millions of small farmers.

Foreign firms farm the land to consolidate their hold over global food markets, the report said.

They also use land to ?make room? for export commodities such as biofuels and cut flowers.

?This is creating insecurity in the global food system that could be a much bigger threat than terrorism,? the report said.

The Oakland Institute said it released its findings after studying land deals in Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Mali and Mozambique.

However, not all companies named in the report accept that their motives are as suggested and they dismiss claims that their presence in Africa is harmful.

One company, EmVest Asset Management, strongly denied that it was involved in exploitative or illegal practices.

?There are no shady deals. We acquire all land in terms of legal tender,? EmVest?s Africa director Anthony Poorter told the BBC.

He said that in Mozambique the company?s employees earned salaries 40% higher than the minimum wage.

The company was also involved in development projects such as the supply of clean water to rural communities.

?They are extremely happy with us,? Mr Poorter said.

Payback time: Manila gets back at Cebu in Baseball Philippines

Manila drew strength from Jon Jon Robles to pull off a come-from-behind 8-6 victory over Cebu in Baseball Philippines Series 8 at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Mandaue City, Cebu on Monday.

The Sharks accounted for two runs each from the seventh to ninth innings after being down by 5-2 in the fifth inning to rack up their eighth victory in nine games and take solo lead in the standings.

Robles entered the game in the sixth inning and gave up a run and two hits in the seventh, but he retired the final six batters of the game.

Robles also advanced the go-ahead run in the ninth inning after a 6-6 tie to complete the comeback from a three-run deficit.

?We just stuck to our game plan by establishing our pitching and defense first. The offense just followed afterwards," said Manila coach Jhoel Palanog.

The Sharks also avenged their defeat against Cebu early in the series.The Dolphins won, 7-2, in their first meeting.

Marvin Malig tied the game, 6-6, in the eighth after a two-run double to left center field to score Edward Landicho and Christian Galedo.

In the ninth, Jarus Inobio singled and reached third after stealing base setting up Robles, who got the Sharks the lead once again after a one-out triple to deep right field.

Landicho made it a two-run game on a sacrifice fly to easily advance Robles home.

Nino Tator and Francis Candela got the Sharks going with RBI hits in the first inning, but Lorenzo Ubungen?s RBI triple to score Joseph Orillana in the third inning got the Dolphins aboard.

Richmond family loses home in fire

A Richmond family is without a home today after a fire tore through it last night. Family members say in the middle of the commotion they couldn't find each other and they feared the worst.

"I thought my dad was in there and I thought he was burning up," says Jacob Callahan.

Jacob was at a neighbor's house when the fire erupted around midnight last night. His first thought was that his dad, Jeff, was in danger.

"I was trying to go in there, but some people were trying to stop me," says Jacob.

Lucinda Lewis lives nearby and describes the horrific scene as she tried to comfort Jacob.

"It just went up in flames like it just exploded. He kept saying 'My daddy, my daddy!' I just told him 'It's OK, baby'," says Lewis.

Jacob got word that his father was at another neighbor's home and ran to tell him what was happening. He says he felt a huge relief when he found his dad safe and sound.

"I went up there and hugged him. I thought he was dead. It was alright after I knew my dad was fine. That's all I care about, really," says Jacob.

Jeff Callahan says when his son told him the news, there wasn't much he could do.

"I just sat back and watched it. Sat around and tried to hide my tears. I didn't want people seeing it, but I guess anybody else would too," he says.

Jeff Callahan says his family will be put up in a hotel for the next few days. Fire investigators haven't said what caused the fire.

Once these costs have been written, further tests must be performed. If your income meets or exceeds the costs, then you?re in good shape. If income is less spending, then you only have two choices. One option is to reduce costs. The other option is to find additional sources of income. There is no magical way in which you can fund the debt by borrowing more money by any means. You do not want to be caught in the machine of perpetual debt. Debt has a price and I can not believe that people are increasingly borrowing to pay for things they can not afford in the first place. A good personal financial planning is absolutely essential to prevent future crises and we must be honest in the development and implementation of these plans.

Alright ? I?m going to admit it. I haven?t played Duke Nukem Forever and, considering the fact that InFamous 2 came out last week (and I?m really enjoying it so far) I don?t have much faith in my chances of playing it at all. That is, unless you guys convince me otherwise!

Put simply ? I?ve heard mixed reports. It looks like this one is strictly for the fans, for those that slapped down the pre-order a decade ago and waited 10 long years to play.

Third-Party Twitter Apps Can Access Your Private Messages Without Authorization

Any third-party Twitter app developer can currently ask you to authorize software using OAuth under the pretense that they will not be able to access any of your private ? both sent and received ? messages, while in fact they easily can. TechCrunch was contacted by developer Simon Colijn, who hopes to make as many people aware of this privacy issue ? or disaster, if you will ? as possible.

Colijn created this test application to prove that the anomaly with the authorization process actually exists. You can use a dummy account if you?re not comfortable clicking anything on that page, but I just ran a test with my personal Twitter account.

Sure enough, I was shown an authorization screen that explicitly told me that the app would not be able to access my private messages ? after which it swiftly did in mere seconds.

To be clear, the developer had selected the option ?Read-only?, which means he wasn?t supposed to be able to fetch (and thus download and store) my direct Twitter messages at all.

This obviously gives the term ?private messages? a whole new meaning.

One Twitter app developer I?ve since spoken to about the privacy issue, Topify.com founder Arik Fraimovich, suspected that what is going on is this:

Twitter recently updated its OAuth screens, which are supposed to give users greater transparency about the level of access third-party applications have to their accounts.

Fraimovich thinks what happened is that Twitter planned to release the new authentication model (which will limit DM access) on June 1st, and then postponed it to the end of June without fully realizing that the new UI for the OAuth permission screens would already be live.

In other words: what you see is not quite what you get.

The reason why I think this is in fact a serious privacy fail that shouldn?t be simply swept under the rug: there are currently hundreds of thousands of third-party applications on Twitter, as Twitter itself repeatedly says, and at this point they can all trick you into authorizing their software while you think they will not be able to see your private messages (or do all other sorts of things with them than just view them, like publishing them elsewhere).

One developer I know, Mike Robinson, was kind enough to verify the bug a third time just to make sure it exists, creating a test Twitter application that exploited the privacy hole in just a couple of minutes. Think about that.

Whether this is indeed a UI screw-up, or a more serious system bug of some sorts, it?s an issue that can affect a lot of people?s privacy.

We?ve contacted Twitter about Colijn?s discovery a few hours ago, but haven?t heard back yet (note that it?s early morning in San Francisco).

Either way, think twice before you authorize third-party apps on Twitter, check your settings to see which applications can currently access your account, and in general be careful not to share too much private or sensitive information via direct Twitter messages.

- Type in the URL of your top competitor to find out their top keyword list.
- The results show the ad position on Google AdWords for the site?s keywords. Pick the top 5 keywords by position and that will be your top 5 keywords.
- Setup your Google AdWords campaign by using your top 5 keywords found in the steps above. Make sure to setup separate ad groups for each keyword.
