The first most common misperception among women is that you need wet hair to cut bangs. This is wrong. You need to be able to see if you have any cowlicks before you take the scissors to your hair, especially if you are doing this for the first time. Do, however, wash and dry you hair before you start cutting. Tie back the rest of your hair carefully, so that you do not accidentally cut off any extra hair and ruin your haircut. You will want to stand in a well lit room, in front of a tall, free-standing mirror. It is also a good idea to invest in professional shears, since the usually arts and crafts type scissors don?t work too well on hair.

Now that you have done your preparation, take a look at your hair in the mirror. Figure out of you have cowlicks or if your hair grows in strange ways if it is cut too short. If you do have cowlicks, you will want your bangs to be a little longer. Now, figure out which side you want your bangs to be, left-oriented, or right? Hold your hair with your non-dominant hand, usually the left, and cut the bangs with your right. This is the tricky part, and you usually want to underestimate yourself here. Cut your hair off little by little, since you can cut more off, but if you make them too short, you will have to wait a while for your hair to grow back before you can fix the look.

Do not cut more than a quarter inch at a time, and the rule of thumb is to not cut more than two inches from your natural hairline. Cut with your scissors pointed straight for an edgy look, or point them down for a warmer, natural look. If you want an even edgier look, cut half inch triangles at the base of your bangs.
