Mayor accused of drink driving

Updated January 02, 2012 10:01:21

Mount Isa Mayor John Molony has been charged with drink driving after recording a blood alcohol level more than two times the legal limit on New Year's Eve.

Councillor Molony says he misjudged the amount of alcohol he had consumed while having dinner with his wife.

He says he had two beers and a glass of wine over a couple of hours and he did not think that was enough to put him over the limit.

The 69-year-old says when he was stopped by police he recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.111 and will appear in court on Wednesday morning.

Councillor Molony says he has never been charged or criminally convicted in his life, and he is embarrassed and sorry about it.

Long-time friend and federal independent MP Bob Katter says people should not be too quick to rush to judgement.

"If he stumbled and fell, well, put your hands up all those that haven't stumbled and fallen sometime," Mr Katter said.

"It doesn't justify the stumbling and falling but it does say we are all human, and I avail myself of this opportunity to pay tribute to a bloke who I consider to be a great Australian."
