One thing I love most about or President and First Lady is that they really see the needs in our communities and country and attempt to bring about change and solutions. A year ago First lady Michelle Obama launched the Let?s Move campaign, an initiative that set out to help prevent and end childhood obesity.
Last Sunday, on BET?s Lift Every Voice, Corey Condrey interviewed the First Lady as she set about on the Let?s Move 2nd Anniversary Tour. Donna Richardson Joyner, an advocate for faith and fitness, spurred the crowd along and got them moving. Yolanda Adams, recently featured here in Enliven Magazine, performed and kept the crowd pumped and excited.
I?ve heard so many people ask, ?What does Michelle Obama know about childhood obesity?? She actually explains how her interest in prevention was sparked by her own personal experience. ?I was like every other mother before my husband took the White House,? she explained to Condrey. ?I was working full time, my husband was working [and we were] probably eating out too much. Our pediatrician, one day, looked over our kids health charts and said things have slipped a bit.?
She then discusses the changes that she made in the lives of her children to get them back on the road of a healthy lifestyle saying that they eliminated processed foods and sugary drinks and they incorporated more water. She also says that she got her kids involved in more activities and kept them active.
The Let?s Move campaign and the overall fight for a healthier country has made huge strides over the past year. It has yielded the following results:
- Walmart has begun making changes to the formulation of their products
- Darden restaurants (the largest restaurant chain in the world) has made changes to its children?s menu
- The military has changed their menu standards after 20 years
- Legislation was passed to provide more improved nutritious meals at schools in our country.
The most inspirational thing the First Lady said in this interview was ?In order to be the best wife and mother I can be, I have to be at my peak of health?we can?t fool ourselves into thinking that we?re going to be good servants of God, good parents, if we?re not whole inside. That means that we?ve got to feed our bodies with the best stuff that we can. We?ve got to move our bodies. We were built to move.?
She then told us to walk. ?Maybe that walk will turn into a run. Add a few more fruits and vegetables. Drink more water. Eliminate all that other stuff and then you?ll start to feel better.
You?ll start to feel more positive. You?ll have all of that extra energy to put into your church community [and into] your family and everything else around you will thrive when you thrive.?
Wow! That is awesome advice. We cannot be our best and be all that we have been called to be if we are sick or unhealthy. Taking care of our bodies is imperative. ?
Hats off to our First Lady and be sure to register to VOTE!
