MILWAUKEE ??Marquette University assistant basketball coach Scott Monarch was dismissed Friday by head coach Buzz Williams after Monarch was found to have lied to athletic department administrators on several occasions about his knowledge of NCAA violations involving a prospective recruit that he knowingly committed.

According to the university, the violations took place when Monarch
provided team-issued apparel and transportation to the recruit in question.
Making matters worse, Monarch lied "multiple times, before eventually
acknowledging his actions," according to a university statement.
Williams expressed his disappointment.
"When I was allowed to review the report earlier this week, I was deeply saddened to learn of an error in judgment of one of my assistants and closest friends," Williams said in a statement. "I take personal responsibility for what happens in this program and realize we must be role models to both our team and the entire university. Our commitment has always been and will always be to operate this program at the highest level of integrity in the Marquette and Jesuit tradition."

In addition to Monarch's dismissal, Williams has accepted a one-game suspension as a self-imposed penalty for his failure to monitor the compliance of his staff. He'll serve the suspension during the team's first Big East Conference game of the 2012-13 season. As part of the self-imposed sanctions, the school also will voluntarily reduce its number of official recruit visits.

Next season would have been Monarch's fifth with the Marquette basketball program, four of which were spent as an assistant coach. He had been on suspension from all duties since mid-June.

"This situation reinforces the need to be focused not only on our rich competitive history but most importantly on the core values that underpin this very unique program ? among the elite in the nation," Larry Williams, Marquette's vice president and athletic director, said in a statement. "It was our obligation to take strong decisive steps as we took this matter extremely seriously. The NCAA has made the role of institutions quite clear in its proposed legislative changes to the penalty structure."
Marquette finished last season with a 27-8 record and has made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in two straight years.
