Germany's RTL, UFA Fiction Greenlight 1920s Series 'Killing Berlin'

COLOGNE, Germany – Leading German commercial network RTL and production group UFA Fiction will jointly develop a new period drama series set in 1920s Berlin.

Killing Berlin is being set up as a historic mini-series and will focus on a police detective working in the wild and decadent German capital in the years before the rise of the Nazis.

UFA Fiction producer Steffi Ackermann, whose credits include the RTL series hits Doctor's Diary and Doc meets Dorf, will develop Killing Berlin together with RTL execs Barbara Thielen and Ulrike Leibfried.

"The main character (in Killing Berlin) is inspired by a real-life figure, but developed further in a modern and forceful way,” said Thielen adding that the series' setting, against the backdrop of the turbulent Weimar Republic, will make for a “gripping and psychologically complex” thriller.

Germany is coming a bit late to the boom in high-end TV drama, which has swept its European counterparts in Denmark (The Killing, The Bridge), France (The Returned) and the U.K. (Sherlock, Broadchurch).
