The Secret History of Elizabeth Tudor, Vampire Slayer by Lucy Weston is, as one can guess, about Queen Elizabeth and her secret life as a Vampire Slayer. I will admit upfront that it wasn?t what I wanted or expected. I wanted something more ?Urban Fantasy? and this is more ?Paranormal Romance?. Despite my disappointment at discovering this, I confess the book was well written and told a pretty good story.
We meet Elizabeth in the very early hours before her coronation when two of her personal advisers secretly usher her to the Tower chapel. There, at her mother?s grave, she has a transforming experience and awakens to her powers as a slayer. She is told that vampires do in fact exist and that she gets to protect her shores from these creatures, as well as from Spain and Rome. The most dangerous vampire is King Arthur?s son Mordred who has been waiting a thousand years for his chance to be King of England, preferably with Elizabeth as his Queen.
While there were many characters in The Secret History of Elizabeth Tudor, Vampire Slayer, we really only get to know Mordred and Elizabeth and, in my opinion, Mordred was actually the more sympathetic character. Elizabeth seemed to vacillate between being Queen, being the Slayer and being a foolish girl in love or lust (depending on which ?man? she was dealing with). I found it hard to accept some of Elizabeth?s choices. To me, she occasionally made smart decisions that would suggest she knew better than to do the dumb things she did. As I said, it was well-written, I just wasn?t the target audience.
