We have been working at our online business since 2005 and built it into a very consistent producer. Income of over $35,000 every year, with profits right around the $30,000 mark.

We have no time for analytics, counting visitors etc. I used to spend half a day pouring over stats, but I gave it up 3 years ago so that I could devote my time to the things that produce income.
Only 2 things matter - how many subscribers sign up each week, and how many new customers have you earned. These 2 things result in income, if you focus on these 2 you will be successful. Bean counters rarely make money online in our experience. Focus on people, how you interact with them, and what they want - then give it to them.
It is all built on trust. Your readers, your subscribers, your customers all have to trust you, just like in any business. It starts with unique content, continues with every email you answer, and ends with your success. You cannot put your success first, when you put your customers first and they win, you will win. Never try and do it the other way around.
It is not difficult to learn either, just a different way of looking at things, and prioritizing your time.
When people tell you that the money is in the list, they are only partially correct. The money is in a 'good' list, one you build yourself to a targeted market. The people on our list of about 15,000 are mostly customers, very loyal customers who have either bought a book, or bought some other product as a direct result of our recommendation.
There are no real tricky programs to learn, just wordpress, phplist (or just transfer to your own autoresponder), and we have tested opencart and believe it warrants further testing. All the sites are now built on the Wordpress format.
The hosting comes with the business making the transfer pretty smooth.

One common fault of a lot of online businesses is that they do not incorporate the concept of diversity into their program, thus when one system fails there is no income. You can see by our consistency that diversity has been the key to our success.

Our branding of EarthPower News has gone very well, with it being an easily recognized and rememberable name. The same can be said of the original AlphaSolar website which used to be a solar panels store, and we converted it into an information and affiliate site which is easily managed.
