SEE IT: Mermaid Parade hits Coney Island

Clad in costumes that combined seashells and glitter, scores of exuberant revelers gyrated through Coney Island Saturday as part of the annual Mermaid Parade.

An estimated half-million people lined the sunny streets to watch ? and sometimes ogle ? Brooklyn?s answer to Mardi Gras.

?I heard how fun the parade was (and) it?s been totally crazy so far,? said Josh Scheiner, 29, of the Financial District, who got several admiring looks for his fish costume ? but not as many as his fianc?e did for her outfit that simply matched a miniskirt with body paint.

The flamboyant marchers ? many of whom wore their costumes on the subway to the amusement of their fellow straphangers ? walked alongside colorful floats and danced to several live bands blaring out a mix of top 40 hits and old-time standards.

Susan Laurita, 49, of San Francisco, had attended the parade for 20 years but decided that 2012 was finally the time to take part.

?It?s so funny ? all of those years, I was in the crowd drunk,? said Laurita, who wore a pink bathing suit and a long fish tail. ?Now, that I?m sober, I still don?t even know how to describe this!?
